Optimizing land grading for construction sites
We applied 3D modeling and optimization algorithms to minimize earthwork

The project
KPMG's consultants approached us with a task to optimize the grading of a 3-hectare site for their client. The main goal was to minimize the volume of soil to be brought in or removed, which directly affected the cost and timeline of the construction project.
Solution
We started by building a precise 3D model of the site using cadastral data and elevation measurements above sea level. Missing data was interpolated to produce a complete picture of the terrain. On top of that model we built a specialized calculator capable of computing surplus and shortage of cubic meters of soil at different grading levels.
Result
As a result, the company was able to dramatically reduce earthwork costs. The optimization eliminated much of the need for additional soil import or export, which also lowered the project's environmental impact. Project timelines were shortened and team effectiveness improved thanks to accurate data and decision-support tools.
